Jazz In The Round returned after its summer recess with a remarkable gig that showcased all the virtues of this exceptional series in the intimate surroundings of The Cockpit Theatre. I have borrowed this brief review from Jazzwise.
“The Cockpit Theatre’s monthly series Jazz in the Round presents the debut of virtuosic trumpeter Noel Langley’s new sextet, the Edentide Ensemble, on Monday 28 September.
“Having released Edentide in 2014, Langley’s performance will be the first opportunity to hear its contents live and re-arranged for a formidable six-piece ensemble including the astounding pianist Alcyona Mick and drummer Asaf Sirkis. Opening the performance with a dynamic, hard-swinging set of standards and originals is the reformation of Chris Valentine’s trombone fronted troupe, On The Slide. The band’s sound is heavily inspired by the big bands of the 1950s and consists of current NYJO trombonists Owen Dawson, Maddie Dowdeswell and James Buckle who will be joined by vocalist Jessica Radcliffe.
"Jazz In The Round’s middle set will feature the spirited duo Binker and Moses comprising of Binker Golding on tenor saxophone and invigorating young drummer Moses Boyd. Having formed an unbreakable bond during their development as part of Gary Crosby’s initiative Tomorrow’s Warriors and travels alongside vocalist Zara McFarlane’s touring ensemble, the pair will explore inventive and passionate late Coltrane-esque concepts and ideas initially formed through jams and explorative experiments during soundchecks.
