Jazz In The Round is a brilliant concert series held on the last Monday of each month (bar August and December) at the historic Cockpit Theatre in Marylebone. It was the brainchild of Jazz On Three presenter Jez Nelson and it was launched on 30th January 2012, sadly no photos of mine from that night, and featured Yazz Ahmed, Stewart McCallum (ex Cinematic Orchestra) and Orphy Robinson’s Blacktop.
The evening has a standard format: there is an up-and-coming band or artiste; a solo artiste; and then a more established act to round off the night. What makes the evening special though is the “round” layout of the room; it’s actually a square with four banks of seats arrayed around the performance space; each banks rises no more than 4 or 5 rows so anywhere you sit, you are within spitting distance of the musicians. This makes for a remarkable atmosphere, which, when you’ve experienced it once, you’ll likely be back for more. Live painter Gina Southgate paints the bands in the process of playing, which lends her canvases great energy and verve.
